It’s been a few years since we’ve seen an all-new Jetta GLI, so when it was revealed just a few short months ago at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, there was a good reason for the crowd and everyone else’s general excitement.
Underneath the sedan skin, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is essentially a GTI. Instead of sporting a hatchback like the hot little GTI, the GLI is a sedan with a trunk, but it sits on the same platform as the hot-hatch GTI, and even shares the same engine specs and transmission options.
Speaking of engine specs and transmission…
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI houses a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that pushes out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. There are two transmission choices (manual drivers rejoice!): either a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 2019 Jetta GLI is only available with a front-wheel drive powertrain.
Aesthetically, the 2019 Jetta GLI receives a few exterior changes in comparison to the regular Jetta, and those include upgraded front and rear bumpers, along with a subtle and classy single red stripe that runs across the front honeycomb grille. Also standard on the Jetta GLI are 18” alloy wheels.
Since this year is the 35th anniversary of the Jetta GLI model, Volkswagen has also released a special 35th Anniversary edition. That means your 2019 Jetta GLI will be outfitted with special badges, as well as black accents throughout and unique 18” wheels.
It’s not just a more powerful engine that the 2019 Jetta GLI has over the regular Jetta. It also features an upgraded active suspension that ensures the GLI is both responsive and comfortable. This Volks sedan can handle the corners, and is quick at the get-go thanks to the 2.0L turbocharged mill.
Classy and sophisticated inside and out, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is also safe and practical with a host of available safety features that include lane-keep assist, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and park assist.
